In the 80’s, the cash strapped City of New
Orleans cut the pay of all NOPD officers by implementing a 32
hour work week. This translated to a 20 percent pay cut for the
dedicated police officers who put their lives on the line to defend
our great city every day. PANO attorney Frank DeSalvo filed a
lawsuit to attack this pay cut and our 40 hour work week was restored.
Your PANO Executive Board had received dozens of phone calls regarding
this one day per pay period furlough proposed by the administration.
We know that this furlough will not only hurt your families but
will also hurt your ability to protect the citizens of our great
city. We are working as this is being typed with our legal counsel,
Mr. DeSalvo, to combat this issue again. The Executive Board has
a meeting with Superintendent Serpas on Wednesday to discuss this
issue. Also, a meeting is being arranged with CAO Andrew Kopplin
. We ask that the city seek alternative means of remedy their
budgetary issues without reducing our hours and risking the safety
of the citizens.
If we cannot come to an agreement we expect to file a lawsuit
by the end of this week. Please call the PANO office if you have
any questions. We will keep you informed throughout this process.
