I have heard from a lot of officers about the lack of equipment and the condition of the faciilities they work in. The 6th District is in relatively good condition, but I hear some horror stroies about other places. And there are certain commands which require special equipment which I am told is either lacking or in serious disrepair.
Ok. How about it? What's wrong, missing, or broken where you work?????

Mike,
I applaud you for wanting to improve working conditions. But I would be willing to bet that there is more than one officer who, for whatever reason, will not want to post that info here. They may not want to identify their posting name with their unit of assignment. It would reduce their anonymity. Might I suggest that you make a list through your District Reps? If you decide to do it that way, post your confirmation here, so everyone will know that is how you want to do it. :D

That is what I like, being able to post comments and not having people know who you are !

I know I am getting old, and my hearing certainly isn't what it used to be, so is it me, or has the radio system become almost useless? I don't recall ever having a poorer sound quality, or more echos and repeated transmissions than we do now. Not to mention having to change channels three times per shift. Is it just me and my radio or what?

No Mike, it's not your hearing, it's this radio system that "only has an occasional glitch", at least that's what Riley says. Still in all seriousness the problem needs to be addressed as a properly functioning radio system is essential to our saftey. In many cases the radio is more important to saftey than either our firearms and our vests. If it's not functioning properly then it puts us at risk. Along those lineshave you heard anything about NOPD getting a "new" system sometime in December? Somebody made mention of this at rollcall several days back.

One equipment problem that has not been addressed is our inability to compile a photographic lineups. Since Katrina, our PrintTrack machines have been offline. Any detective who needs to put together a lineup must go to JPSO, Greta PD, or Kenner PD and get on their knees and beg to use their machine. Sometimes detectives drive to different locations for hours begging to use their lineup machine. Is this a valuable use of our investigators time? How can we call ourselves a major police department if we do not have to basic tools needed to do an investigation? Good luck out their and keep your heads up!

For my money, this is the biggest issue with equipment we have right now.
The dang things are so useless my unit communicates almost exclusively via cell phone.

(Though in another equipment issue I will mention is the fact that we still cannot have shotguns or rifles.)

Dont worry the last thing I heard is that HQ will be open in about 3 mts, just in time for Christmas. I am sure that HQ will be outfitted with all the latest tools for NOPD to use, new radio system, new lineup machines, everything you could ever want.

We will be moving on up to the east side, and we are going to get a piece of that pie baby !!

So, I guess we aren't moving to the Amaco building?

I have heard that the AMOCO building is out. I hear that HQ might be ready in some form or fashion in a few months, but that's not from a reliable source so don't take it to the bank.

In the near future we hope to meet with the administration in an attempt to learn what is holding up the relief effort as it concerns our department. I will keep you updated and ask that you forward me any problems that you are experiencing as it concerns your working conditions.

For those citizens visiting our web site, you may be interested in the following:

None of the flooded district stations have been repaired, that includes the Fifth, Third and Seventh Districts and the Special Operations Division building (SWAT and Traffic Division).

Most of the damaged NOPD equipment has yet to be replaced.

Paul,

I do not know where they are doing it, but P.I.B. has access to PrintTrack to do lineups.

This message was forwarded from Signal26.com, and was described as a report by Compliance Officers to the Command Staff regarding Conditions in the 3rd District:

"While in the Third District several officers expressed concern about the following:

1) No repair work has begun in the Third District Station, and a walking tour of the station by Compliance Officers noted dead mice on the floor. The rest rooms, both men and women, while having no running water, should not be used. However, both rest rooms in the Third District Station had toilets full of fecal matter and in deplorable condition.

2) The administrative trailer has no running water, and the bathroom in there also does not work. These circumstances leave the officers of the Third District with no place to use the rest room, except the port-a-cans in the parking lot.

3) A check of the port-a-cans showed they were dirty, had no toilet paper, hand towels, or hand sanitizer available. They were also filled to the top of the holding tank and had not been emptied in about one to two weeks.

4) Third District Officers had to go other places when they had to use the rest room facilities. Some were going to the Shell Gas Station several blocks away to use the rest room, and the desk officer has to call a car in from the street in order to get restroom relief. This takes a unit off the street, which could be answering calls for service and fighting crime.

The above issues could also pose a potential health problem with fecal matter and dead mice in the station and should be addressed as soon as possible. The working conditions are worse than poor and were almost better just after the storm. The officers working in this district deserve better, and steps should be taken to address and correct this situation as soon as possible."

This is shameful! No one should have to work in such conditions. This is exactly what PANO and FOP should be banging the drum on, working conditions. But noone says anything. We just keep on keeping on. Some heads should roll for this!

I happen to know for a FACT that you guys have grant money sitting IDLE not being used. I am not revealing my sources but they are factual and solid. Now it might be gone now but I know post Katrina 9 months later it was STILL there and sitting waiting to be put to use, the money was awarded so.. 1M smackers laying in wait.
