Lt. I spoke with you a few months ago after learming some interesting news about JP and the state Sheriffs pension. For those who are not aware, their system is set up so that any overtime worked goes toward their pension. I know PANO has been extremely busy over the past few months, but I was wondering if you have been able to look into this. While it is something that would have to be worked on by all departments involved within our pension system, I'm sure everyone would be on board. It would be a great incentive for new recruitment, as well as retention of experienced officers. While I assume some type of new legislation would have to been written for the change, is it possible?

As a municipal agency, we are part of MPRS (Municipal Police Officers Retirement System), which is different from the Sheriff's Offices. We are not governed by all of the same rules. At the very least, there may be some ability for the overtime accrued during the post-Katrina Emergency status. I will make the appropriate inquiries and get back with you.

In conversation with the Pension Board, PANO has learned that they voted to include KATRINA overtime in the pension. This has been done for Captains and above, but not for Lieutenants and below. In conversation with Stephanie Landry, she is going to Baton Rouge today on an unrelated issue, but will inquire about it and get back with us. We will keep you posted.

Thanks for the info. Lt. They should be compensated for the endless hours they put in during that time. Just curious, when something like that is approved by the pension board does it also have to be approved by Civil Service?

Civil Service controls pay rate. It does not control or calculate pension.
